Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis
Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is the collective term that describes safe, non invasive methods to measure body composition including lean body mass, muscle mass, body fat, intra and extracellular water, fluid distribution and cellular health.
How does it work?
1. Electrodes are placed on the hand and foot
2. A small electrical signal is passed through the body
3. Body parts/ tissues conduct the current differently
4. BIA is used to measure how the electrical current passes through the body
5. This information is used to calculate total body water and body composition
How is it useful for clients?
The information obtained from BIA helps track a clients progress over time, this allows us to monitor nutrition and lifestyle recommendations.
The BIA report provides tangible evidence for the client, this can help motivate the client to make nutritional and lifestyle changes in order to improve their results.
What are the most useful pieces of information obtained via BIA?
Lean mass is the non-fat component of your body including muscle, organ, bone and fluid. Ideally the client will have much higher lean mass to body fat ratio.
Dry lean mass is measuring muscle mass excluding water and glycogen. This helps track muscle health, growth and development.
Fat mass is total body fat in kilograms; if overweight this measurement provides the client with an exact number of kilograms they need to lose in order to be healthy.
Total body water measures the total amount of water in your body, helps to assess hydration.
Intracellular water (ICW) Extracellular water (ECW) provides information on fluid distribution.
Low ICW may be due to low muscle mass, poor potassium/ magnesium status and poor cell health.
High ECW may be due to inflammation, sodium, hormonal fluid retention or poor nutrition.
Prediction marker (impedance ratio) assesses fluid balance and cellular health. Prediction marker gives a snap shot as to how well the cells are coping.
Phase angle reflects the quality and quantity of muscle cells and is one of the best markers of cell membrane function.
